It used to be January 6, El Dia de Los Santos Reyes, or the Feast of the Epiphany. The date may change, but the feast remains the same and it brings back memories of inclusiveness as God tries to tell us that his love is universal and that he loves all that he has created. I believe Almighty God has a special love for all the men, women and children that he has created and continues to create. I so often think about God's universal love for us and then look around at all the suffering throughout the world and people's inhumanity to people. The feast of the Epiphany tells us that the beautiful story of the Magi is God's way of telling us that he has no favorite among favorites and he loves all people with a creative and unconditional love. Many of the traditions, customs and memories of the feast of Los Santos Reyes always seemed to enhance these realities. They were right in line with theological and scriptural bases with the coming of the Magi to Bethlehem.

This causes a little bit of a conflict when you realize that in the world we have the Haves and the Havenots, and the Haves seem to enjoy what they have and only reluctantly share it with the Havenots. I believe it is tragic that we have been tricked into the 'us and them' mentality. After all, we were all created by Almighty God to be happy here and in the hereafter. I often wonder what makes the Haves think that they have a right to so much more than the Havenots. This, I believe is precisely the reason for the feast of the Epiphany. The prophecies of a messiah, a redeemer, and a time of justice and peace for everyone were made to the Jews but it was never God's intention that anyone take possession of these promises for themselves alone, so in this feast God tells us that all of us, like the Magi, are the recipients of the prophecies with responsibilities to go out to the whole human family and remind everyone that Almighty God wants everyone to enjoy dignity, peace and happiness. Of course, God wants to accomplish this through all of us who are made mindful of his universal will. So on this feast we should all enjoy the blessings God has given and continues to give to us being mindful of the responsibility that we are to do all in our power to make sure that everyone enjoys these same blessings.
